Facing My Fears: the Dentist Isn't That Bad

posted on 20 January 2012

A couple of years ago I went to the dentist for the first time in several years. Despite needing dental work on my front teeth - some dental implants? - I had been putting off going to the dentist, partly out of fear of the pain that would be involved, and partly for fear of ridicule by the dentist. I decided that I would face my fears and go to the dentist to improve my oral health. Both of my fears turned out to be mostly unfounded. The dentist was friendly if a little brisk. She chided me for staying away from visiting the dentist for so long but reassured me that I had done the right thing. After a consultation I was told to come back for three appointments over the next month. Two of the appointments required me to undergo a local anaesthetic. The needle caused a sharp pain in my gum for a few seconds, but after that I relaxed and the dentist was able to carry out her work. My mouth was numb for about an hour afterwards but I am very pleased with the results and I feel much better for facing my fear!?
